Essential Duties of the General Assignment Writer:
- Identifies and generates compelling feature stories and news articles to increase employee engagement and education, and to support university priorities, across multiple channels.
- Interprets complex issues and presents them effectively to internal and external constituents; adapts style, tone and word choice to channel and audience needs.
- Drives an editorial calendar that balances a variety of information to engage and inspire employees across campus.
- Edits, proofreads, formats and distributes announcements affecting work life at UC Merced.
- Drafts talking points, statements and messages for administrative leaders as needed.
- Forge and maintain strong relationships with colleagues across the university.
- Contribute to communications projects from conception through completion.
- Manages expectations to preserve stakeholder relationships and department reputation.
Bachelor s degree in communication, public relations or a related field and three years of directly related experience and/or equivalent experience and training.
Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation.
Thorough knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines.
Thorough skills to write clear, lively, engaging and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and/or the broader public, while ensuring adherence to the location s message.
Thorough knowledge of the location, including its mission, goals, achievements, infrastructure, programs, and policies.
Thorough knowledge of issues in higher education, a specialized academic discipline or field and /or health sciences.
Knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, and/or web production.
Thorough research and fact verification skills.
Thorough interpersonal communications skills, including active listening and effective collaboration skills.
Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills.
Thorough attention to detail, project management and organizational skills.
Skill to maintain confidentiality.
