About the Department

Responsibility for monitoring elements of the campus climate that bear on sense of community, diversity and inclusiveness resides in the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, in conjunction with the numerous stakeholders addressing campus climate related to equity and justice and a broad and diverse cross section of the campus community, works
strategically in the development and assessment of policy, programs, and initiatives aimed at increasing diversity, improving campus climate and promoting inclusiveness.

About the Job

The Director of Equity and Justice will work closely and in partnership with the Division of Student Affairs and the Dean of Students Office and Office of Social Justice Initiatives & Identity Programs, other departments such as but not limited to campus entities including the Calvin E. Bright Success Center, Student Health Services and the Ombuds, Office. Must work collaboratively with various campus departments and Divisions across the campus by helping to coordinate diversity training, workshops, and as appropriate teaching an academic course. The Executive Director will assure consistency of message and focus between the campus and Health System programs; eliminate redundancy in preparation of educational content between the campus and Health System and identified campus stakeholders; and coordinate program coverage across the institution. This position is responsible for developing, supervising and evaluating volunteers who are responsible for providing campus-wide service in the area of diversity education and broader campus climate.

Under broad direction of the Associate Chancellor & Chief Diversity Officer, Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, the position provides leadership in the development, implementation, coordination, evaluation and delivery of educational programs related to diversity, equity, inclusion, cultural competency development and other initiatives designed to enhance campus climate and campus community relations. The Director provides leadership in the design and implementation of department initiatives and programs which include, but are not limited to, equity, diversity and inclusion, training and curriculum development related to equity and justice.

Working under general supervision, the Director is responsible for supporting and maintaining the University of California, Merced s commitment to cultural diversity, equity, and social justice, through the development and implementation of programs based on best practices. The four primary areas are: Diversity Education: directing, developing, and implementing diversity education programs both in a proactive effort to advance diversity among staff and faculty, and in reaction to particular workplace conflicts. In partnership with Academic Affairs, Human Resources, Student Affairs, and the Police Department, provide leadership and coherence in developing training programs for faculty, students and staff, including law enforcement officers, on diversity, equity, inclusion and cultural competency. Provide leadership in the development and evaluation of volunteer diversity trainers/ educators who have campus-wide responsibility in teaching courses and facilitating workshops related to diversity and inclusion.


Recruiting and overseeing the Equity & Justice Board, Diversity, & Inclusion Advisory Board membership include faculty, staff, administration and students addressing campus climate and providing recommendations to the Associate Chancellor & Chief Diversity Officer, Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Special projects such as but not limited to the implementation of the inaugural Equity & Justice Conference at UC Merced, Black Excellence Retreat, Equity and Justice Student Grants. Equity, Inclusion and Community: direction and oversight of existing programs, including Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Grants, building curriculum to but not limited to the Diversity Awareness Certificate Training, Equity & Justice Awards, and strategies intended to promote equity, inclusiveness and to build community, and operationalizing the UC Merced Principles of Community (POC). Representation, Visibility and Mediation: represents the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion on institution-wide committees, workgroups, management teams and recruitment authorities; serve campus units in an advisory capacity in the informal resolution of workplace discrimination and harassment complaints drawing experience and mediation skills.

Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in related area and 5 years of directly related progressively responsible experience, or equivalent experience / training.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES

* Experience leading group discussions that carry high potential to be emotional, confrontational, or threatening to some participants. Experience handling sensitive matters involving workplace climate, discrimination and/or harassment and maintaining strict confidentiality.

* Highly skilled communication and interpersonal skills to communicate with and influence others, both verbally and in writing.

* Project management experience related to diversity, equity, inclusion and/or Affirmative Action/EEO initiatives.

* Highly skilled in all levels of project management. Analytical skills and experience translating research, metrics, and trends into strategy.

* Advanced knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures and external regulatory requirements in policy domain.

* Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes. Experience in developing educational/training curriculum and teaching, facilitating and/or conducting trainings and workshops related to diversity/multicultural education, equity and inclusion.

* Advanced knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques. Experience using broad perspective and strategic thinking to balance policy and practice.

* Interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to articulate clearly concepts related to cultural competency, sensitivity and the value of diversity and inclusive environments to students, faculty, staff and community members.

* A nuanced understanding of research universities including the research, teaching and service missions; the role of research and graduate education; and the dynamics between and among faculty, academic staff, nonacademic staff, graduate students and undergraduate students.

* Team building and leadership skills to achieve goals and promote an inclusive and collaborative environment.
