About the Department
External Relations raises funds and develops partnerships to
support faculty, students and programs, and builds relationships
that advance the mission of UC Merced with government, community,
business, industry and opinion leaders, through strategic
communications, public outreach and visibility strategies. External
Relations supports the work of the UC Merced Foundation, a
volunteer fundraising board that helps promote and increase private
philanthropic support, advocates for the university and manages a
portion of the university's endowment.

About the Job
The Director of Development (Merced) will be a vital member of a
young and fastgrowing institutional advancement program and will be
responsible for contributing to the success of the department s
annual fundraising goals.
Demonstrates experience as a successful Director of Development
including: identifying and qualifying new prospects; cultivating
and stewarding current and previous donors; proving meaningful
touchpoints for UC Merced philanthropic engagement; and closing
five-, six- and seven- figure gifts.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate initiative and must be
strategic, well-organized, flexible, dependable and goal-oriented,
with an enthusiastic and positive personality, strong interpersonal
skills, the ability to manage complex projects and maintain a
collaborative work-style. May coordinate and oversee the work of
support staff and/or other professionals.
This position will report to the Executive Director of Major and
Institutional Giving within the Department of Philanthropy and
Strategic Relationships, housed in the Office of External
Actively identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards donors.
Plans, schedules and implements fundraising activities to advance
the major gift pipeline and maximize private fundraising support to
the university. Manages a portfolio of 60+ prospects in Merced and
the Central Valley region who have the capacity to give $25,000+
over a 5- year pledge period.
Develops strategies with the ED of Major and Institutional Giving
to ensure team goals and the individual monthly activity benchmarks
are met. Monthly and annual benchmarks will vary and will be
determined according to the department s annual fundraising goal
and size of development team. Metrics and benchmarks will track new
contacts made, visits completed, solicitations completed, major
gifts received, and amount raised.
Generates proposals and customized request materials. Prepares
drafts of donor correspondence for campus leaders and assist with
development of ancillary materials, including but not limited to:
briefings, status reports, talking points, programs, thank you
letters, and strategic communication memoranda.
Maintains appropriate records, including timely entry of required
items in the donor database. Track all prospect and donor
interactions. Monitor personal progress through database dashboard
and tracking of personal metrics.
Attends community events, networking opportunities and utilize
personal network to increase the reach of UC Merced in the
community and surrounding areas.
Bachelor s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or
related area and three (3) years of progressively sponsible
prospect management and successful
development experience or equivalent training/experience or
Advanced degree in Communications, Public Education, Marketing or
related area and three to five years of progressively responsible
prospect management and successful development experience,
preferably in higher education. Candidates with transferable skills
and enthusiasm for the position will be considered.
Knowledge & Skills

donor relations, moves management and public relations concepts,
principles, techniques, procedures and practices.
* Thorough working knowledge of the organization and ability to
articulate its vision, mission, goals, funding priorities,
objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
* Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations,
policies, et cetera.
* Thorough written, oral and interpersonal communication skills,
including political acumen, to build and maintain effective working
relationships at all organizational levels and with external

Colleagues within External Relations and the Department of
Philanthropy and Strategic Partnerships.
* Travel with and provide staff support to campus leaders and
trustees, as needed.
* Intrastate travel to engage trustees and generate support in
assigned geographic region(s).
* Represent UC Merced at internal, external and third-party events
(including evenings, weekends, and possibly some holidays).
* Demonstrated ability to personally and effectively cultivate
major gift relationships and close gifts of $25,000+.
