ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, CETL The University of California, Merced (UC Merced) invites nominations and applications for the Associate Director of the Center for Engaged Teaching and Learning (CETL), an administrative position in the Office of Undergraduate Education. The successful Associate Director candidate will join the intellectual and strategic leadership of CETL and will: Work collaboratively to shape the activities of the CETL to facilitate the work of the University's faculty and instructional staff in providing all students with an excellent education; Contribute a broad understanding of emerging trends in higher education to campus conversations about teaching and learning; Promote and disseminate research and scholarship on student learning and university teaching, including best practices in curriculum assessment; Develop and sustain collaborative relationships within the University; working with faculty, staff, graduate students and administrators from varied disciplinary backgrounds and pedagogical traditions; and Join and collaborate with a high-caliber professional staff of diverse backgrounds. RESPONSIBILITIES: Associate Directors in the Center for Engaged Teaching and Learning (CETL) work collaboratively with the Director and Associate Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning to shape a wide variety of programs aimed to advance teaching, support the strategic initiatives at UC Merced. Based on empirically sound pedagogical principles, the Associate Directors (ADs)collaborate to create, refine, and lead professional development opportunities for faculty and graduate teaching assistants across the University. Additional responsibilities include research-based consultation on topics such as the effective course design and delivery; instructional assessment techniques; inclusive and innovative teaching strategies; classroom organization and management; and other related topics that serve the interests and needs of new and seasoned faculty. Serving as a pedagogical partner for individual faculty members seeking advice on matters related to teaching and learning, the ADs recommend pedagogical modifications based on the interpretation of mid-course and end- course student feedback; review assessment of student learning materials and course evaluations as they relate to faculty teaching effectiveness and development; and assist faculty wishing to create flipped, hybrid and/or online UC Merced courses. The new AD will work alongside the CETL team to monitor emerging trends and research to promote pedagogical methods appropriate to specific disciplinary settings and a diverse student body, and represent the CETL's work at briefings, campus visits, conferences, and other academic venues. Job responsibilities will continue to expand in scope and depth as the UC Merced campus grows in size and complexity in its programs. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. or Ed.D.; A minimum of three years of discipline-based teaching experience in higher education (preference will be given to candidates in STEM-related disciplines); Experience implementing inclusive teaching practices that support diverse students, especially first-generation and historically underrepresented university students; Experience working with faculty on the development and/or modification of course design, curriculum, and instruction; Knowledge of theory and the practical application of research on higher education teaching and learning; particularly in inclusive curriculum, assessment, and signature pedagogies; Demonstrated ability to work well independently, meet deadlines, multitask, and assist on a variety of projects; and Outstanding verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working in a teaching and learning center; specifically, prior work with faculty and graduate teaching assistants from STEM-related disciplines. Experience establishing collaborations across multiple units in a complex institution. Experience in either successful grant writing or a record of peer-reviewed publications in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL).
