Student Health Services (SHS) serves the campus by providing health
promotion and medical services to all University of California,
Merced students. Services are designed to enable students to get
the most from their educational experience, minimizing the impact
of illness, injury and emotional distress on their academic
Student Health Services provides a variety of medical services,
which are similar to the outpatient care provided in a physicians
group practice. These services include primary and urgent/acute
care, evaluation and guidance for individual health problems,
family planning services, public health prevention programs, and
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Medical Assistant performs
a variety of clinical and receptionist support functions for Health
Services, including rooming and taking patient vitals, point of
care testing, phlebotomy, medical record keeping, other clinical
support duties, and medical reception.
The position works in collaboration with the Registered Nurse, LVN,
and medical providers to provide clinical and educational
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Maintain BLS/CPR certification through the American Heart
Understand and comply with federal HIPAA regulations and California
Medical Records Act.
Understand and comply with MSDS and Hazmat procedures and policies
as part of UCM's OSHA compliance program. Understand and comply
with OSHA s Blood borne Pathogen Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030).
Understand and comply with OSHA requirements (29 CFR Part 1910) for
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as defined by the University
Environmental Health and Safety Manager and the University of
California, Merced Safety Manual.
Understand and comply with Hazardous waste handling standards and
health center policies.
Ongoing training/ refresher courses are required annually.
Understand and comply with the University of California, Merced
Note: This is a temporary employment pool for a Medical Assistant
Per Diem . This position is reopened every six months so please
re-apply if you remain interested in the position. This position
will close on June 30, 2019.
High school diploma or equivalent plus two to three years of
relevant clinical and reception experience, or a combination of
education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills
Associates degree preferred.
Written evidence to validate training and competency as a medical
assistant (i.e., certificate of completion of an accredited medical
assistant training program, or letter from supervising
Good typing/word processing, spelling, filing, reception, and other
general office skills.
Possesses good basic reading, writing and math skills.
Well trained and experienced in the use of an electronic medical
Good basic technical knowledge/skills related to assigned clinical
duties; medical assistant training/certification desirable.
Ability to speak clearly and comfortably and use tact, discretion
and sensitivity in dealing with patients; and to deal courteously
and efficiently with physicians, hospital personnel, insurance
companies, attorney s offices, and others.
Ability to use discretion in handling confidential information.
Knowledge of HIPAA and California Medical Records Act privacy
Working knowledge of computer software such as: medical records,
scheduling database, patient management, and word processing.
Skill in oral and written communication to meet the needs of a
diverse population and student health center staff.
Knowledge of patient care charting and patient histories.
Ability to maintain calendars and schedule appointments.
Knowledge of outpatient clinical administrative procedures.
Knowledge of inventory management practices.
Ability to perform standard clinical procedures according to
