About the Job:
Under minimal supervision, oversees the activities and staff of the
chemistry instructional laboratories including the supervision of
entry/intermediate level instructional associates and laboratory
support staff. Supervises the development and execution of major
instructional and experiment design.
Demonstrates knowledge of general, organic, and inorganic
chemistry, the ability to act independently to solve situations
regarding personnel and laboratory experiments, maintain
confidentiality, practice ethical decision making, and show sound
judgment in budgetary matters. Provides quality instructional
laboratory support for undergraduate course work, training of lab
and teaching staff in scientific procedures and techniques, the
establishment of the appropriate laboratory safety protocols for
staff and students, and ensuring the maintenance and repair of the
facilities. Ascertains and researches equipment needs for purchase
and makes provision for support of activities such as special
events and the programs offered by other departments during summer
Responsible for all aspects required for the successful support of
several Chemistry lab courses, including general chemistry II,
organic chemistry, and advanced synthetic laboratory, and inorganic
lab. Provides back-up support for the general chemistry I,
principles of organic chemistry, instrumental analysis, and
physical chemistry lab. Responsible for all aspects of operation
and maintenance for the following equipment: balances, pH meters,
polarimeters, hand-held uv-vis spectrometers, thermal conductivity
gas chromatographs, infrared spectrometer, and nuclear magnetic
resonance instrument. Responsible for the supervision of the
operations of the chemistry instructional lab support group in the
absence of the supervisor. Demonstrates effective communication
with faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students to provide
assistance, supervision, or instruction as needed.
Bachelor s degree in Chemistry or related area and two years of
progressively responsible related laboratory experience.
Master s or Doctorate degree in Synthetic Chemistry or related
field is highly PREFERRED.
Advanced knowledge of general and specialized laboratory
Advanced knowledge of a limited variety of specialized laboratory
equipment for use and troubleshooting.
Solid leadership skills associated with planning work assignments,
establishing priorities and scheduling instructional space.
Solid interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective
working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
Ability to motivate a diverse work group whose skills and knowledge
range from students with no scientific background to experienced
staff holding University degrees.
Advanced knowledge of necessary lab safety procedures and
requirements, as well as chemical disposal guidelines.
Knowledge of inventory planning, purchasing, and storage.
Solid writing abilities to effectively communicate lab experiments,
policies, and procedures to staff, instructors, and students.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and practice ethical
