Thousands of California kids need help getting ready for Kindergarten and you can make all the difference. Offer your time and talent as a tutor and be more for preschool students.

As a Preschool Tutor you’ll spend your days helping children ages 3-5 to talk, read, write, sing and play in order to develop early literacy and math skills and get ready for Kindergarten. Embedded in a classroom, you’ll work closely with a teacher to enhance daily activities and help students build both skills and confidence. With great training and onsite coaching, you’ll be ready to make an impact. Students make the most progress when you are there, so our tutors serve during school hours and are needed for the whole school year. 

We are currently recruiting for the 2021-22 school year. Service will begin in August 2021.

This is an AmeriCorps member position with Reading Corps. Although the earnings are modest, the rewards are great! You’ll join an amazing group tutors, determined to help students be more.

• Be the early literacy and math support for a classroom of preschool learners — spend your days helping children play rhyming games, write their names, learn letter sounds, and counting skills.
• Be committed to helping students build their skills and confidence. 
• Be ready to grow by participating in coaching sessions two times per month to review child progress, plan, problem solve, and set goals.
• Be impactful by participating in training and ongoing professional development throughout your term of service.
• Be the motivation and represent Reading Corps at school-sponsored activities to help build awareness of Reading Corps and early literacy.
• Be an ambassador of the program by sharing your experience with the wider community.

Give your time as a tutor and you’ll receive a scalable perks package based on your time commitment of 35 or 25 hours per week.

Perks at 35 hours a week:

• A stipend of $700 paid every 2 weeks
• Up to $4,441 for tuition or student loans*
• Federal student loan forbearance and interest repayment
• Child care assistance — Based on family size and income

Perks at 25 hours a week:

• A stipend of $500 paid every 2 weeks
• Up to $3,172 for tuition or student loans*
• Federal student loan forbearance and interest repayment

*Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55+ may gift their award to their child, grandchild, stepchild or foster child.

Great tutors come from all walks of life. Whether you are 18 or 85, the most important qualification is a desire to help children succeed. That said, you also need to meet the following minimum qualifications by the time you begin your service.

• Are dependable and have a history of good attendance
• Able to understand and follow instructions
• Are energized by young learners and want to help them discover new things.
• Eager to work collaboratively with the classroom teaching team.

• Have basic computer skills (like email and navigating online)

• Can speak, read, and write English fluently
• 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent
• A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States*
• Agree to and successfully complete a background check

*Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.
