Position description

The Library is hiring a Graduate Student Researcher to compile a reading list for a proposed reading room at the Community & Labor Center (CLC). The successful candidate will work with librarians to create an annotated bibliography of at least 125 publicly accessible materials and will make recommendations for best practices regarding their use in consultation with librarians and the CLC.

Project Deliverables:


  • An annotated bibliography for publication of (at minimum) 125 items of publicly accessible materials relevant to the intended audience of a future Community & Labor Center (CLC) community reading room
  • Make recommendations for best practices in consultation with librarians and the CLC on collection management and aspects of managing related resources, as needed
  • A recommendation for a subset of these materials that should be included in the UC Merced Library's collection

      Qualifications


      Basic qualifications

      • Graduate student at UC Merced with an interest in local issues surrounding community action on labor
      • Ability to carry out research on a topic directed by a librarian.
      • Ability to manage reference data and summarize resources, e.g., using a spreadsheet or citation manager software
      • Ability to describe and synthesize potential materials for inclusion in the bibliography, including adding metadata and annotations
      • Strong interest in enriching the UC Merced community through selecting high quality sources
      • Ability to meet at least weekly either in-person or via Zoom
      • Ability to meet deadlines and work independently





        Preferred qualifications

        • Ability to read and process materials in non-English languages (E.g. Spanish, Hmong, Portuguese, Indigenous languages from Mexico and Central America)
        • Previous work with community organizing or advocacy work
